Prime lens

I've been thinking of going back to prime lenses lately, back to when I used to shoot with a knackered old Zenith. I had a 35mm and a 50mm and it was not much bother to quickly change between each one. For many, many years I've been using my 17-35mm and I'm beginning to feel it's 'heavy' presence. So, after much thought I've gone for a nice small 35mm instead of a 24mm (thanks Sean for tipping me over). Any day now.

Dave Beckerman has a nice thought   here

  1. A 35 huh? Which one?

My 35 isn't exactly what you'd call small, it weighs about 560 grams. It's well balanced on my camera but the weight of a 1Ds is over 3lbs so you're looking at over 4lbs with my 35.

    How many Leica's is that?

There's a much bigger difference between 35 & 50mm than 85 and 100mm. I did have a 16-35 for a couple of weeks but sent it back I just couldn't get the feel for it but I think that was my own failings as I know more now than I did then. I kept the 50 and the 85 I bought with it and added the 35 a year or so later along with a 135. I can't say I use the 135 or 85 too much these days. That might be down to the arrival of my only zoom a 70-200mm but I recon it's just I shoot wide/normal.

I'm going to do a bit of testing. I may lighten the load

  2. Another thought. A good habit to get in to is just taking the one prime out with you. It's a good discipline as it forces you to see how the lens sees, no lens swapping to get closer you move your arse.

No lens swapping also means less sensor cleaning and one camera one lens lightens the load.

  3. I agree with the difference between a 35 and 50 and it's what made me decide on getting the 35. The 28 for me was just too much, distortion a major factor.

I opted for the Nikon 35mm AF f2.0. Light and a nice range of f stops, something I'm familiar with . . . going back to the roots I guess.

Also going back to the Baby, I love it.

  4. Well with the insane ISO's you can get out of your camera you're virtually be able to see in the dark with that baby
